Version Differences

A difference in functionality between the versions is something which Microsoft has not pursued for some years. The major differences between standard and data centre licensing focused on virtualization rights or AVMA (automatic virtual machine activation) rather than basic functionality.

This will all change with the launch of the 2016 Server: the majority of all new features will be available on the data centre version while the standard version represents a significantly improved 2012R2 server.

Core functionality of Windows Server
OSEs / Hyper-V containers Unlimited 2
Windows Server containers Unlimited Unlimited
Nano Server
New storage features including Storage Spaces Direct and Storage Replica
New Shielded Virtual Machines and Host Guardian Service
New networking stack

If these new features are new territory for you, we'll be providing more information on the exciting new features in Server 2016 soon.
