transtec: Virtualisation Requires Special Backup Solutions

Banbury, February 30, 2015 – The increasing demand for virtual servers and higher data availability requirements place new expectations on backup and recovery applications. transtec explains what to consider when deciding on a solu-tion.

The requirements on an all-round data backup concept have changed radically over the last few years. The reasons for this include the explosion into Terabyte data or the need to encrypt and swiftly replicate data. However the main reason for the fundamental change in backup and recovery demands lies in the success of virtualisation.

“The use of an application developed for physical backups on virtual machines is not the recommended approach to take here. Custom-ers now want backup strategies that can manage the specific requirements of virtualised infrastructures”, explains Matthew Prew, managing director at transtec computers. “This is the only successful way of minimising downtimes, managing the highly dynamic workloads of virtual systems and keeping costs down.”

transtec advises organisations to consider six aspects when deciding on a backup solution:

1. Multi-hypervisor support

The backup solution should support multiple hypervisors, definitely the most common ones such as VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. This ensures a user-friendly backup of virtual machines (VMs) with different hypervisors from a central console. This also helps to save costs.

2. Agentless backup

There are various options available for data backups in a virtualised environment. These include file system level backups or agent-based solutions. However, it can be of benefit to perform data backup and recovery without the use of agents – with a backup on hypervisor level. This will cut out the time and cost spent on installa-tion, monitoring and management of agents on every single VM.

3. Parallel VM processing

The solution should also support the parallel processing of multiple virtual machines. Besides optimising the use of the storage infra-structure, it also improves the entire backup performance. This solution enables several large data media on one VM to be pro-cessed at the same time.

4. Maximum data security

End-to-end data encryption is an integral part of the backup solution, both when transferring and storing data.

5.  Native tape support

Many companies still rely on tape backups. This is why a backup solution should offer the option to copy files and backups onto tape, ideally as a combined backup-to-disk-to-tape solution.

With the aim of reducing power consumption in the context of “green IT strategies”, backup-to-tape is increasingly being deployed to archive specific data backups onto tape that are used very rarely .

6. Cloud compatibility

Not least, it is also worth considering adding a cloud to the data backup solution. Using a Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) concept helps to significantly improve data availability as the encrypted data is securely replicated in an external data centre.

“Data backup and recovery in virtualised environments rely on solutions that are adapted to the storage and virtualisation concept. This is the only way to avoid an unnecessary degree of complexity”, Matthew Prew explains. “For SMBs in particular it can make sense to call upon the support of an external service provider.”
